The Press Complaints Commission

http://www.pcc.org.uk/

The PCC is an independent self-regulatory body which deals with complaints about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines (and their websites).

The code of practise areas are:
- Accuracy
- Oppurtunity to reply
- Privacy
- Harassment
- Intrusion into grief and shock
- Children
- Children in sex cases
- Hospitals
- Reporting crime
- Clandestine devices and subterfuge
- Victims of sex cases
- Discrimination
- Financial journalism
- Confidential sources
- Witness payments in criminal trials
- The public interest

From the activity I have learnt about the factor that have to be considered for published materials, what the editiors have to do and how these factors will affect Shindig Whirl and what needs to be included in my magazine.

The main ideas of the Press Complaints Commission is to ensure the published information is accurate, keeps the privacy of the people involved (especially in cases involving children and sex cases), doesn't intrude and gives the reader an oppurtunity to reply. With some cases, it could be argued that the article is intruding in peoples personal life however it can be argued that the article is in the public interest sector, for example, John Terry having an affair was deemed in the public interest sector because he is considered a role model in society.

Research into specific magazines/ potential competition

I have done some research for my magazine to look at the existing magazines on the market and the competition my magazine would have. I have used the internet and published magazines to find out the prices, frequency and features of the potential competition.

My research has helped me make decisions with the creation of my magazine for things such as the images I will shoot, the price and ideas of the contents. My research has helped me a lot in deciding the image of the magazine, each item used on the magazine has a denotation and connotation so I have to be aware of the effect this will have on my target audience and how it will appeal to them.

Mock marking exercise

This exercise entailed peer assessing the blogs for the preliminary assignment.
I found this exercise very useful because it enabled me to view other peoples perception and experiences with the preliminary assignment and by assessing a minimum of three blogs, I was able to get a broad opinion. By looking at the other blogs, I was able to see what was missing from my own blog or see if anything could be added or improved. By doing this mock marking exercise, I was able to see the marking criteria and for the main assignment I will be able to complete my blog to a higher standard because I can learn from the mistakes found.

Focus group

As a small group, we discussed the following about music magazines:

Music tastes artists genre what they are listening to now recent tastes what not liked?

No specifics that people listen to, general like for every genre of music with the exception of Classical and country music. Music listened to at the moment is tending to be chart music such as songs in the top 10 but other than this no specific genre or bands.

When asking about favourite bands again there were no specifics just general bands that would usually appear in the charts with a few exceptions for bands that are perhaps not as high profile as the usual chart toppers.

Consummation of music:

We often listen to music to pass the time, at home or when we’re “out and about”, this includes listening to music all the time on an mp3 player or a mobile phone. Laptops are also used as a source of music because of the accessibility to online music such as on Youtube or online radio stations. Also, music is accessible on TV so we can listen to radio stations when at home.

When finding out about new music, it often stems from recommendation from friends, this could be by “word of mouth” or on social networking sites such as Facebook. Often new music is introduced on the radio before being released and also Youtube often has recommended/featured videos which will promote new music.

Overall, as a class we discovered:
- Not many people consume music magazines.
- Sales of specialist magazines are usually around 30000-50000
- Music tastes are generally fairly narrow.
- Illegal downloading means less money is coming into the music industry so there is less money for advertising.

What the consumer wants to see in a music magazine:

When asking my focus group what they want to see in a music magazine, they wanted to see popular bands or artists that they like, a way of presenting these in a magazine would be through reviews and interviews. My focus group also wanted to find out upcoming dates of tours, including fewstivals and the line ups. Also, music related new stories were a popular choice for being in a music magazine, to enable the consumer to get up to date with the music world.

Target reader profiles

My target audience are young, lively, party goers.

Genre map

One of the categories, based on form, style, or subject matter, into which artistic works of all kinds can be divided.
- For example, the detective novel is a genre of fiction.

Agreed by:
Producers – are worried about the performance because if they have poor performance the magazine is unlikely to be successful.

Audience –

Marketing – magazines need to be well marketed to increase the popularity and reputation of the magazine. Magazines will be financed by the advertising.

Critics – critics are important in the sales of a magazine because they will talk about the magazine, this can both positive and negative, for example if the magazine is recommended by a friend you’re likely to buy it.

º Classical
º Pop
º Electronic/dance

Typical features in any music magazine

I have used the internet to find images of front pages and contents pages to look at trends in the listings of the music magazines. I have also bought two magazines DJMag and MixMag to help me with my research, so I have used these to find trends.

The typical features in any music magazine are:

- Interviews
- Music reviews
- News
- Technology
- Music charts
- Gig/tour dates
- Adverts
- Celebrity
- Reader input

This list will help me deciding on what content I will have in my magazine.

How to analyse a magazine - Denotation and Connotation

For this task I have used two potential competition magazines to analyse: DJ Mag and mixmag

From this task I have learnt some of the features of a magazine such as the typical layout, the front cover, the content and the advertisments. With everything that goes into the magazine has a purpose and meaning which helps portray the magazines image. For example, David Guetta on the front cover of "mix mag", the connotation of this is to portray a up to date view on the music world because he is a very popular artist who is currently in the well known in the music media industry.

Also, this task has enabled me to view the typical features of music magazine.
